Vidya Balan: My career trajectory changed when I only started doing things that excited me

The actor on Ishqiya improving her career, how Parineeta made her so conscious of how she was filmed, and why she picked the role in Nerkonda Paarvai, and more…

Edited excerpts:

You spoke of Ishqiya having changed a lot of things in your career. I would’ve thought that would be Parineeta, which presented you beautifully in that classical way, and almost every frame could be hung as a painting, and your role was fantastic.

Thank you. You know, Parineeta was my first and will always be special, and the way Pradeep Sarkar shot me I had the pressure of wanting to look like Parineeta for the first couple of years. I was very conscious about which angle I was shot from because he took great care. But thankfully, by the time I reached Ishqiya, I just let go because it was others’ job to make me look good. I have to focus on just doing my best.

My first few films brought me a lot of acclaim, and suddenly, there was stardom and all that, but then I did a couple of films like Hey Babyy and Kismat Connection, which I was very indifferent to. I think there was a taken-for-grantedness, and that shows in me. But I think I realized, with those two films, that whatever you do in front of the camera, you can’t take for granted, and I decided to do stuff only that excited me.

There are films like Nerkonda Paarvai, the remake of Pink, opposite Ajith, where you had a small role. Was it a fun thing that you just did?

Yeah. I didn’t even give it a thought because Sridevi had just passed away and I met Boney ji and he said he wanted me to do a special appearance in his film, which he said, stars Ajith and is a Tamil remake of Pink. I said I don’t want to know anything. I just did it out of love for Sridevi and Boney ji.
